POSITION PURPOSE:

Lays building materials, including concrete and brick, and constructs or repairs surfaces or structures.

DUTIES:

  • Fabricates, alters, repairs, and maintains walls, sidewalks, street curbs, floors, bathroom showers, sink, counters, partitions, manholes, and other related structures or surfaces.
  • Lays blocks or bricks following blueprints, plans or drawings.
  • Determines work requirements and sequence of masonry/tile assignment through review of work orders, plans or drawings.
  • Lays out work using chalk lines, plumb bobs, tapes, squares and levels.
  • Mixes cement using hoes, cement-mixing equipment and/or hand tools.
  • Check the forms that hold the concrete to see that they are properly constructed.
  • Set the forms that hold concrete to the desired pitch and depth, and align them.
  • Spread, level, and smooth concrete, using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float.
  • Monitor how the wind, heat, or cold affect the curing of the concrete throughout the entire process.
  • Waterproof or restore concrete surfaces, using appropriate compounds.
  • Layering building materials such as tiles and other construction materials.
  • Cuts or breaks bricks and concrete using hammers, powered abrasive saws, paving breakers, drills and/or hand tools.
  • Molds expansion joints and edges using edging tools, jointers, and straightedge.
  • Build wooden molds, and clamp molds around area to be repaired, using hand tools.
  • Fabricate concrete beams, columns, and panels.
  • Estimates materials and labour.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies needed to perform job function.
  • Report major repairs and items which cannot be repaired to the dispatcher for further action.
  • Due to the nature of the business the individual may be required to do other duties and special projects as assigned by the supervisor.

SUPPORTIVE FUNCTIONS:

In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions, with the percentage of time performing each function to be solely determined by the supervisor based upon the particular requirements of the hotel.

OTHER:

Regular attendance in conformance with the standards, which may be established by Sonesta Maho Beach Resort & Casino from time to time, is essential to the successful performance of this position.

Employees with irregular attendance will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

Due to the cyclical nature of the hospitality industry, employees may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the hotel.

Upon employment, all employees are required to fully comply with Sonesta Maho Beach Resort & Casino rules and regulations for the safe and efficient operation of hotel facilities. Employees who violate Hotel rules and regulations will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

Education:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or any other combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. High school diploma preferred.

Experience:

Three (3) years masonry or bricklaying experience OR any equivalent combination of experience from which compatible knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Certificates:

A technical training certificate in masonry, tiling or bricklaying.

Grooming:

All employees must maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance (specific standards available).
